Still, with the help of a few "gaming buddies" I have been able to play a variety of times.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

</tbody></table>
<br />
Last Sunday, Rob and I played our first game of "Black Powder" with two of my "Imagi-Nations", the most worthy <span style="color: red;">Principality of Saxe-Bearstein</span> <i><span style="color: #666666;">(cheers welcome)</span></i> and their vile neighbor, that nasty <span style="color: blue;">Kingdom of Stagonia</span> <span style="color: #666666;"><i>("boos" and "hisses" appropriate)</i></span>. <a href="http://jeffswsa.blogspot.ca/2016/05/battle-of-bittewasser-our-first-try.html">Here is a link to the battle</a>.<br />
<br />
But I have also played some ECW games and several "Lion Rampant" games, as well as a bit of "Pulp Alley" . . . most of which I have not gotten around to blogging about.<br />
<br />
Anyway, check out our recent <a href="http://jeffswsa.blogspot.ca/2016/05/battle-of-bittewasser-our-first-try.html"><b>WSA</b> battle</a> . . . that stands for "<a href="http://jeffswsa.blogspot.ca/2016/05/battle-of-bittewasser-our-first-try.html">Wars of Stagonian Aggression</a>" for those who hadn't guessed it.<br />

<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OpbbmG7TqA0/VsE8UzBn80I/AAAAAAAAByg/Xiy8pDV4Zco/s1600/Game_Pic__02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="247" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OpbbmG7TqA0/VsE8UzBn80I/AAAAAAAAByg/Xiy8pDV4Zco/s400/Game_Pic__02.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">From our third "Lion Rampant" game.</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"> </td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"> </td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
As you can see by the above photo, I use pieces of outdoor carpet to indicate terrain. <span style="background-color: #38761d;"><b>Dark Green</b></span> is used for woods; <span style="background-color: #b6d7a8;"><b>Light Green</b> </span>(upper left) is used for brush; and <span style="background-color: #fff2cc;"><b>Gray</b></span> is used for rocky areas.<br />
<br />
You might also notice that I have trees for the woods and plants for the brush but nothing for the rocky areas. I asked Rob (one of my players) to gather some small stones so that I could scatter them on the carpet sections. Rob did so, but then got creative . . . and this is what he did before sending me a photo of what he has made for me:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rzxfA-3zq-w/VsE-mWB9dTI/AAAAAAAABys/VmOBXrwREJQ/s1600/Rough_Ground__01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="166" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rzxfA-3zq-w/VsE-mWB9dTI/AAAAAAAABys/VmOBXrwREJQ/s400/Rough_Ground__01.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Rob's Rocks will work magnificently</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I think that these will work marvelously, don't you?<br />
<br />
By the way, here is <a href="http://duxrampant.yuku.com/topic/573/master/1/?page=1#.VsDvWeYYFrj">a link to Rob's account</a> of our most recent games.<br />

(April 20, 1643) at my home . . . and while I have been too "under the
weather" due to my chemotherapy to actually play, David, Rob and Alex
managed to fight it twice.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yGCVYmhCQMc/VfeHomTIGII/AAAAAAAABqE/UqzF8Frp3VI/s1600/Whalley_Town_2.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yGCVYmhCQMc/VfeHomTIGII/AAAAAAAABqE/UqzF8Frp3VI/s400/Whalley_Town_2.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Most Royalist troops start at rest in the Town.</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
We used the "<a href="http://www.wfgamers.org.uk/WWAE.htm">Warr Without an Enemie</a>" rules from the Wyre Forest Wargames Club . . . including the <a href="http://www.wfgamers.org.uk/images/resources/Whalley.htm">scenario</a> for the Battle of Whalley <span style="color: #666666;"><i>(which is included in the rules as well as <a href="http://www.wfgamers.org.uk/images/resources/Whalley.htm">online</a>)</i></span>.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TmktSs-mrss/VfeNjg_QyAI/AAAAAAAABqU/YMPepSZ52r8/s1600/2nd_Whalley_Over_Bridge.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TmktSs-mrss/VfeNjg_QyAI/AAAAAAAABqU/YMPepSZ52r8/s400/2nd_Whalley_Over_Bridge.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>Cavalry with 5 DPs moving over bridge.</i></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i><br /></i></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i><br /></i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Above you can see some Royalist cavalry moving over a bridge. The dark
rectangle on the left of the image contains its <span style="color: #666666;"><i>(currently hidden)</i></span> Orders. The
white square with the red "5" indicates that this unit already has five
"disruption points" . . . (<span style="color: #666666;"><i>note that
the opposite side has the numbers 1 through 4 on different sides so that
it can be used to show how "disrupted" the unit currently is</i></span>).<br />
<br />
Because of the "mind fog" that my meds create, I only hosted the games
and tried to somewhat follow them. Once my chemo is over I hope to play
myself.<br />
<br />
I will leave it to the others to post their photos and accounts since
they were both mentally sharper and are better photographers. When
available I will add links to their photos and accounts.<br />

<br />
<br />

<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xZTOQ5bZVpo/VcKTL-yKWYI/AAAAAAAABoU/r9WZUkL1tYM/s1600/Early_Action.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="285" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xZTOQ5bZVpo/VcKTL-yKWYI/AAAAAAAABoU/r9WZUkL1tYM/s400/Early_Action.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Early action from behind Royalist force.</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Unfortunately I was unable to play <span style="color: #666666;"><i>(my chemotherapy leaves me very fatigued)</i></span>, but I was able to host, watch and enjoy the battle as Rob <i><span style="color: #666666;">(Royalist)</span></i> and <a href="http://murdocksmarauders.blogspot.ca/">Murdock</a> <span style="color: #666666;"><i>(Parliamentarian)</i></span> battled it out.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3eyhTQmpwWw/VcKUo1qpCpI/AAAAAAAABog/zsfaUfValeg/s1600/Advancing_Cavalry_1.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="311" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3eyhTQmpwWw/VcKUo1qpCpI/AAAAAAAABog/zsfaUfValeg/s400/Advancing_Cavalry_1.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">More Royalist cavalry sweeps out as well.</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
In case you are curious, <a href="http://murdocksmarauders.blogspot.ca/">Murdock</a>
provided the the dark blocks in front of units have their orders
written on them. He also brought some "Disruption Point" markers (sides
marked 1-4 and the reverse side with a dreaded 5).<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Cw82isldtzg/VcKetcDpknI/AAAAAAAABow/yng9TUS6lgA/s1600/Parliamentary_Horse_1.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Cw82isldtzg/VcKetcDpknI/AAAAAAAABow/yng9TUS6lgA/s400/Parliamentary_Horse_1.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Parliamentarian ponies move up to engage.</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Sadly due to my medical state I wasn't able to follow the action well enough to recount it here . . . but hopefully <a href="http://murdocksmarauders.blogspot.ca/">Murdock</a> will soon post an account <span style="color: #666666;"><i>(and much better photos)</i></span> on his blog. . . . <a href="http://murdocksmarauders.blogspot.ca/2015/08/ecw-warr-without-enemie-battle-of.html"><span style="color: #666666;"><i>(which he has now done)</i></span></a>.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: blue;"><b>In addition, as of August 16th, Rob has posted <a href="http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?381459-Codsticker-s-Historicals-Fun-With-Plastic%21%28and-now-metal%29&p=7521617&viewfull=1#post7521617">his account and photos of the battle here</a>. </b></span><br />

</tbody></table>
<br />
As I mentioned earlier, I wasn't in condition to record the game BUT I do recall our all liking the rules. For me <span style="color: #666666;"><i>(and I think the others)<span style="color: black;"> </span></i><span style="color: black;">the main attraction was that the <b>player</b> is challenged to make lots of choices during the game. I know that we also felt that the mechanics encouraged period results.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #666666;"><span style="color: black;">So the overall result of the night was that we will definitely play them again.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #666666;"><span style="color: black;">Oh, and the results of the battle? . . . I think that I will leave that to <a href="http://murdocksmarauders.blogspot.ca/">Murdock</a> to write about. . . . <a href="http://murdocksmarauders.blogspot.ca/2015/08/ecw-warr-without-enemie-battle-of.html"><span style="color: #666666;"><i>(which he has now done)</i></span></a>.</span></span><br />

The reason is simple, I am back on chemotherapy and between that and my pain meds, I am usually exhausted and seldom clear-headed.<br />
<br />
I was able to 'referee' a 16th century battle using Clarence Harrison's "<a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B2z9Y0PeMN7TMjVmOGU3NDItMmYzZC00Y2RiLTg1YjItNjRhNGQxNDRkZTlm/edit?pli=1&hl=en">Victory Without Quarter</a>" ECW rule set. <a href="http://murdocksmarauders.blogspot.ca/">Murdock</a> and Rob faced off and (as expected because he's played before and Rob was new to these rules) Murdock emerged victorious . . . although Rob did destroy several of Murdock's units.<br />
<br />
Here are a few photos:<br />

<br />
I was also without a computer for a week or so. I had been thinking of getting a new one anyway when I somehow picked up some nasty malware and my old computer was essentially junk.<br />
<br />
So rather than try to salvage it, I bought a new one and it took quite a while for the tech guys to save (and transfer) most of my old data files.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I am now back . . . but at a much-reduced level.<br />

<br />
Murdock and Rob were supposed to stop by on Sunday night to play out our
28mm Battle of Edgehill using the "For God, King and Country" rules . .
. but Murdock had transportation difficulties so he emailed me to have
Rob <i><span style="color: #666666;">(who hadn't even read the rules)</span></i> take over command of the "Roundheads".<br />
<br />
Unfortunately Essex <span style="color: #666666;"><i>(Murdock)</i></span>
had previously committed his reserves to shoring up his left flank so
he had left nothing behind his front line . . and at the end of our last
session, Apsley's regiment had destroyed its opponent opening up the
rebel front.<br />
<br />
Needless to say, while Essex <span style="color: #666666;"><i>(Rob)</i></span> did his best, King Charles <span style="color: #666666;"><i>(long may he reign)</i></span> exploited this opening and soon the end became inevitable and so before long the forces of Parliament were fleeing the field.<br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: #fff2cc;"><b>"While the leaders of the
disloyal opposition have fled, the public need not fear. They will be
apprehended and punished for their crimes by the justice of our good
king."</b></span><br />

We were joined by Rob P. who was interested but had never fought with any historical figures <i><span style="color: #666666;">(his playing background was with Games Workshop rules)</span></i>. So of course I gave him a command.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aeCn2jDTJDk/VXEjzhothlI/AAAAAAAABjw/7sFoP_r3M6A/s1600/IMG_0474.JPG" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aeCn2jDTJDk/VXEjzhothlI/AAAAAAAABjw/7sFoP_r3M6A/s400/IMG_0474.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A view toward the Royalist left where Rob is about to charge</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
One of Rob's cavalry units was about to make his first charge with historical miniatures, which it then did:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2H-t_tPaTaE/VXEjXWfSXrI/AAAAAAAABjs/YiWCAR-FWIo/s1600/Edghill%2Bmay%2B30th%2B006.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2H-t_tPaTaE/VXEjXWfSXrI/AAAAAAAABjs/YiWCAR-FWIo/s400/Edghill%2Bmay%2B30th%2B006.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Rob P's photo of his troops charging home.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Slamming home . . . and in the resulting melee his Royalist troops emerged victorious. <br />
<br />
As we fought on several units <span style="color: #666666;"><i>(on both sides)</i></span> were eliminated during the short time we had to play . . . but never fear, we will soon continue this epic encounter.<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OHvZn5Vqotk/VVmPl6HZrHI/AAAAAAAABiE/eAJpixCM1WU/s1600/Edgehill_Center_2_Setup.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="226" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OHvZn5Vqotk/VVmPl6HZrHI/AAAAAAAABiE/eAJpixCM1WU/s400/Edgehill_Center_2_Setup.jpg&container=blogger&gadget=a&rewriteMime=image" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">View from behind the Royalist center with Rebels in distance.</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Murdock has already posted a pair of blog posts on our battle . . . with much better photos than the few I took:<br />
<br />
http://murdocksmarauders.blogspot.ca/2015/05/edgehill-for-god-king-and-country.html<br />
<br />
http://murdocksmarauders.blogspot.ca/2015/05/edgehill-for-god-king-and-country_17.html<br />
<br />
Also to correct something I had posted earlier . . . we ended up playing
on a 5' wide by 10 1/2 foot long table since the 8' table was not long
enough.<br />
<br />
Also I should publicly thank Murdock's son Alex for his help in playing
my right wing <span style="color: #999999;"><i>(i.e., Prince Rupert's command)</i></span> since I am somewhat
challenged healthwise and was not physically up to dealing with the long table.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KtleeTsHE8E/VVmYj4vLNkI/AAAAAAAABiw/CXj_cn8G06A/s1600/Edgehill_Right_Wing_Setup.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="178" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KtleeTsHE8E/VVmYj4vLNkI/AAAAAAAABiw/CXj_cn8G06A/s400/Edgehill_Right_Wing_Setup.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pre-battle view of Royalist right . . . Alex's command</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I won't try to recreate the battle <span style="color: #999999;"><i>(I wasn't up to taking notes)</i></span> . . . but following are a pair of photos that I took later.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">looking from Royalist left down the line.</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>

<br />

<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-N2jFyaN6yao/VVmbqdX0l7I/AAAAAAAABjU/QzlYm2aAvZc/s1600/Edgehill_Casualties_Mount_1.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="257" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-N2jFyaN6yao/VVmbqdX0l7I/AAAAAAAABjU/QzlYm2aAvZc/s400/Edgehill_Casualties_Mount_1.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Casualties mount up on Royalist right wing.</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
We had to suspend that battle after seven full turns because Murdock
and Alex had a prior commitment<span style="color: #999999;"> <i>(and I was running out of energy)</i></span> . . .
but we are planning on resuming it on this coming Wednesday evening.<br />

While we built all of our basic units with six 2" square stands each for smaller battles, we will be using the <b>"For God, King and Country"</b> rules for Edgehill <span style="color: #666666;"><i>(and other large battles)</i></span>.<br />
<br />
Translating their 15mm basing for our 28mm collections, we have two stand Cavalry units and three-stand Foot units <span style="color: #666666;"><i>(one pike & two shot)</i></span>.<br />
<br />
Due to the nature of our collections AND the dearth of knowledge about
many units, we have had to substitute units we have in quite a few
instances. I have tried to be as correct as I could but there are
instances where nothing is known.<br />
<br />
Following are photos of my Royalist pike & shot units for Edgehill.
The rules that we are using include a scenario built on the "five
brigade" model <span style="color: #666666;"><i>(as opposed to the nine brigade model)</i></span>. As always, click on photos for a larger image <span style="color: #666666;">(<i>and open in separate window by double-clicking for largest image</i>):</span><br />

As for the Cavalry, other than the Gentlemen Pensioners <span style="color: #666666;"><i>(pictured at top of page)</i></span> who were in reserve and didn't do anything, they were formed up on the left and right:<br />

<br />
I have a bunch of figures I will temporarily use for dismounted Dragoons
if I don't have time to get the real ones painted but I've not taken
photos of them; nor of my Artillery . . . and of course, my Generals and
Brigadiers are still on painting sticks.<br />
<br />
By the way, so far the leading contender for our smaller action ECW games is <a href="http://www.wfgamers.org.uk/WWAE.htm"><b>"Warr Without an Enemie"</b></a> . . . but we are still open to other suggestions.<br />

<br />
It was different from the Tony Bath version (which I have) but I do not recall who posted it. Would someone please direct me to it?<br />

news. The bad news is that I am not nearly so far along with their
riders.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ahciRwcbLS0/VMq7ryo7AtI/AAAAAAAABfM/8pabV31DhEc/s1600/Horses_Inked.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="145" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ahciRwcbLS0/VMq7ryo7AtI/AAAAAAAABfM/8pabV31DhEc/s1600/Horses_Inked.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
All that I have left to do with these horses is to paint their saddle
cloths . . . but they look like a lot of horses, don't they?<br />
<br />
What? Do I hear mummers of unease? Surely I need to add more horsey detailing? . . . Actually, <b>no</b>. . . . Please allow me to espouse a bit of my tabletop philosophy.<br />
<br />
With cavalry I want the focus to be on the <b>rider</b>, not the horse. I paint my horses very quickly and simply <span style="color: #666666;"><i>(as described below)</i></span>. Particularly since they will be in units, I want the viewers' eyes to "see" horse <span style="color: #666666;"><i>(you did, didn't you, when you saw the photo above?)</i></span> and to focus on the rider.<br />
<br />
I know that others paint beautiful horses . . . and I appreciate that . .
. but my figures are for tabletop play and I'm satisfied with my
philosophy.<br />
<br />
Some years ago I was timed on my horse painting technique and it was
determined that I spent less than a minute and a half total brush time
per horse.<br />
<br />
"<b>Impossible</b>", you say? Not at all. There is of course
considerable "drying time" between steps associated with my method, but
the "brush time" is quite short.<br />
<br />
I start by "black priming" with a spray primer <span style="color: #666666;"><i>(this is not "brush time" but it doesn't take long)</i></span>.
I wait at least a day, usually more before moving on. Then I do a very
quick "damp brush" with white over the horses . . . so that the raised
areas and broad flat areas are covered. The result looks something like
this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4t3DcSl_o5g/VMq_b2l7qQI/AAAAAAAABfY/A4v6y2h8G5s/s1600/Damp_Brush.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="140" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4t3DcSl_o5g/VMq_b2l7qQI/AAAAAAAABfY/A4v6y2h8G5s/s1600/Damp_Brush.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Each horse <span style="color: #666666;"><i>(even those with the same pose)</i></span> will have a slightly different mix of black and white. After that dries, I will then do another <span style="color: #666666;"><i>(slightly drier)</i></span> "damp brush" with a "horse color" <span style="color: #666666;"><i>(numerous tans, light browns, red-browns, and darker browns)</i></span>.<br />
<br />
It is important to keep in mind the fact that most paints <span style="color: #666666;"><i>(especially yellows, reds, and many browns)</i></span>
are really translucent and not opaque. I don't have a photos of this
step, but the result should have a mix of black, white and horse color .
. . but it is certainly on the blotchy side.<br />
<br />
After they are dry, the final step is to "ink them". I mostly used two
different inks for the horses at the top of this post . . . a chestnut
ink and a tree brown ink. . . . I mixed them each about 50/50 with water
and "washed" the horses with one or the other.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #666666;"><i>(Note -- a few horses were washed with a
third "nut brown" ink that didn't do well so I will have to re-ink
those before using them on the table top. Perhaps you can spot them.)</i></span><br />
<br />
I should also note that I turn the painting stick upside down so to be
sure to get their bellies and undercuts from below, then run some wash
over the top as well. And again, this <span style="color: #666666;"><i>(like previous steps)</i></span> is a very quick process. I am not being "overly careful".<br />
<br />
You can see the result . . . and they look like horses to me . . . although they will look much better with riders <span style="color: #666666;"><i>(which are not nearly as easy to paint)</i></span>:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ahciRwcbLS0/VMq7ryo7AtI/AAAAAAAABfM/8pabV31DhEc/s1600/Horses_Inked.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="146" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ahciRwcbLS0/VMq7ryo7AtI/AAAAAAAABfM/8pabV31DhEc/s1600/Horses_Inked.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>

<br />
David helped me greatly by doing a lot of the tedious prep-work on many horses as well as some detail painting on several dozen riders. While nothing is that close to getting on the table yet, they are a heck of a lot closer now than they were this morning.<br />
<br />
So a great big "THANK YOU" to my gaming buddy for his wonderful assistance today (as always) . . . and a heartfelt wish for him (and the rest of you) for a wonderful and game-filled New Year!<br />

Alas we are now limited to using <b><i>artificial trees</i></b> since I have not regained my strength since my illness and cannot deal with the real ones. So here I am with our "porch tree":<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5QPcToVgSVI/VJjrjoWrwtI/AAAAAAAABeU/UQV1DGkISDA/s1600/2014_Jeff%2Bat%2Bporch%2Btree%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5QPcToVgSVI/VJjrjoWrwtI/AAAAAAAABeU/UQV1DGkISDA/s1600/2014_Jeff%2Bat%2Bporch%2Btree%2B3.jpg" height="315" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And here is what the porch tree (and lights) looks like at dusk:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NP0HdizM6z0/VJjsT_c0atI/AAAAAAAABec/EOhNw0qIZbE/s1600/2014_Porch%2BTree%2B%26%2BLights%2Bat%2BDusk_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NP0HdizM6z0/VJjsT_c0atI/AAAAAAAABec/EOhNw0qIZbE/s1600/2014_Porch%2BTree%2B%26%2BLights%2Bat%2BDusk_2.jpg" height="311" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Meanwhile, inside the house, we have our Yule Tree:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OdUxRBUhMnw/VJjsl1HRsNI/AAAAAAAABek/6pOXYLS7mhI/s1600/2014_Indoor%2BTree%2B2%2Bat%2Bnight.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OdUxRBUhMnw/VJjsl1HRsNI/AAAAAAAABek/6pOXYLS7mhI/s1600/2014_Indoor%2BTree%2B2%2Bat%2Bnight.jpg" height="640" width="408" /></a></div>
<br />
And finally, in order to get some sort of "Christmas Tree Scent" in the house we have a bunch of fir boughs in a vase with decorations in our great room:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DCx3kn6GDq4/VJjtHbldOMI/AAAAAAAABes/M8NxJ5UGBvU/s1600/2014_Tree%2Bscent%2Btrick.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DCx3kn6GDq4/VJjtHbldOMI/AAAAAAAABes/M8NxJ5UGBvU/s1600/2014_Tree%2Bscent%2Btrick.jpg" height="400" width="367" /></a></div>
<br />
And so we will wrap up the year as we wish you and yours a most wonderful holiday and a fabulous new year.<br />
<br />

<br />
Having just finished a nice turkey dinner that my dear wife prepared for us, I am feeling quite mellow . . . so please allow me to wish all of you a very thankful time; and remember that you do not have to wait for a "special day" to do so.<br />
<br />
My very best wishes to all of you!<br />

I am also near finishing four units of Commanded Shot . . . but I still
have ten units of Cavalry as well as a couple of Dragoon units <span style="color: #999999;"><i>(both mounted and on foot)</i></span> as well as all of my Generals and Brigadiers . . . not to mention artillerymen.<br />
<br />
So I am far <span style="color: #999999;"><i>(okay much too far)</i></span>
from being where I want to be with this army . . . but for me the
hardest part is now finished because unlike most gamers I find foot far
more tedious to paint than mounted troops. Beside which all I really
only need to finish is some of the mounted and a few officers before <a href="http://murdocksmarauders.blogspot.ca/2014/09/parliamentary-force-autumn-parade.html">Murdock</a> and I can try out some ECW rule sets on the table top.<br />

<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fzQIOvfB59s/VB6JkMX3ZVI/AAAAAAAABS4/k8DGMLYBKd4/s1600/Ordnance%2BBlew.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fzQIOvfB59s/VB6JkMX3ZVI/AAAAAAAABS4/k8DGMLYBKd4/s1600/Ordnance%2BBlew.jpg" height="288" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>Nasty Parliamentary Gunners</i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Now I must make clear that Murdock himself is not an evil chap . . . he is in fact a jolly fine fellow and a very kind and helpful friend. His ECW army on the other hand is filled with the sort of fellows who would cancel Christmas . . . indeed I believe that Cromwell did just that . . . certainly not the kind of people one would want in one's home.<br />
<br />
I, on the other hand am building a Royalist force <a href="http://saxe-bearstein.blogspot.ca/2014/09/first-ecw-figures-finished.html"><i>(see my last post)</i></a>. Now I will freely admit that Charles is not my ideal as a king . . . but he IS king . . . and you would certainly rather have the Cavaliers at your local pub than those Roundheads. Admit it . . . who would you rather have a round or two with, stout fellows or Bible-thumping puritans who would banish "cakes and ale"?<br />
<br />
Now I must confess that Murdock did agree to take on this Evil Army as a concession to me since I wished to run the Royalists <span style="color: #999999;"><i>(as I sure you would too)</i></span>. He really is a jolly good chap <span style="color: #999999;"><i>(even if he is serving as a Roundhead)</i></span>.<br />

Following the photos <i><span style="color: #999999;">(click for larger images)</span></i> I will discuss my reasons for the "unusual" basing and for the "command figure" in front of the units.<br />

<br />
So why did I place five figures on the pike stands <span style="color: #999999;"><i>(placed like a five pip on a d6) </i></span>and three figures on each shot stand . . . all instead of the usual four on each?<br />
<br />
I firmly believe that pikes should be in "close order" and that <span style="color: #999999;"><i>(with burning matches)</i></span> matchlock men would be in a looser <span style="color: #999999;"><i>(although not "open")</i></span> order for safety's sake. Others may well disagree, but I think that it looks good.<br />
<br />
As for the "command figure" in front of each unit, it does not fight.
It is simply a marker for the unit's current status . . . in front for
good order, in back for disordered, and well behind the unit if shaken.
This allows for a "marker" that does not disrupt the look of the
battlefield.<br />
<br />
Flags <span style="color: #999999;"><i>(and coat colors)</i></span> are from the fine <a href="http://www.wargamesdesigns.com/">Wargames Design</a> website . . . although I have increased the flag size to 45mm square <span style="color: #999999;"><i>(pikes/flagstaffs are 80mm)</i></span>. My bases are nominally 2" square . . . but are actually 47mm square so that they will fit into my display cabinet.<br />
<br />
Figures are a mix of 28mm Perry, Warlord plastics and some unknown figures I got from another gamer. <br />
<br />
Now to finish the rest of the Foot so that I can move on to the cavalry.<br />

painting table more than a few times. Pictured below is the current
state of a dozen Pike & Shot units:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4Syju5bjBWo/VADzQ00ZeaI/AAAAAAAABRs/WIjj62EpmNY/s1600/ECW_Foot_Progress.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4Syju5bjBWo/VADzQ00ZeaI/AAAAAAAABRs/WIjj62EpmNY/s1600/ECW_Foot_Progress.jpg" height="133" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All figures were placed on painting sticks and black primed, then "damp
brushed" with white and coloured "identifiers" painted on the sticks.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Since then all figures have had at least 5 colours applied <i><span style="color: #666666;">(many have more)</span> </i>-- at a minimum every figure has flesh, hair, headgear, coat and breeches painted.</div>
<br />
Since I wanted an "irregular Regular" appearance, I have used three somewhat similar coat colours in each unit <i><span style="color: #666666;">(painting one stick each of pike & shot with each colour)</span>.</i> I then used four varied colours for breeches <i><span style="color: #666666;">(painting one figure on each stick with each colour)</span></i>. Also I've varied the hat colours as well.<br />
<br />
The result is that no two figures are painted the same way . . . but that each unit will look like a unit <i><span style="color: #666666;">(albeit perhaps a bit ragged or with differently aged uniforms)</span></i>.<br />
<br />
So, what is left to do? Most of the leatherwork <i><span style="color: #666666;">(belts, boots and pouches)</span></i>, most muskets and most metal bits plus a few odds and ends.<br />
<br />
Oh yes, I also have four units of Commanded Shot at about the same point
in the painting process . . . but all of the mounted still await my
brush . . . *sigh*.<br />
<br />

It uses quasi-Germanic names. It is free for anyone to use for an Imagi-Nations campaign if they so wish.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IS6E1VBpgnE/VEySucPjl0I/AAAAAAAABUc/coDEFH2B3uU/s1600/Azkyk005_Towns_Rivers.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IS6E1VBpgnE/VEySucPjl0I/AAAAAAAABUc/coDEFH2B3uU/s1600/Azkyk005_Towns_Rivers.gif" height="281" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b>Map Updated</b> on October 25, 2014</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I might well use this for an upcoming Solo Campaign War between Saxe-Bearstein and those ever-vile Stagonians . . . but using on-line rulers to run the larger aspects of the campaign.<br />
<br />
What you see above is a stretch of the the Azkyk mountain range which separates a pair of traditional enemies . . . and unfortunately there are numerous passes through the hills that armies might use.<br />
<br />
What I was thinking about was allowing each side the following:<br />
<ul>
<li>Four "Field Generals" -- One of whom must protect the capitol.</li>
<li>Sixteen "Brigadiers" -- minimum of three with each General</li>
<li>30 Battalions of Foot -- 6-10 with each General</li>
<li>20 Regiments of Mounted -- 4-8 with each General</li>
<li>30 Battalions of Militia Foot -- max of 4 per city</li>
<li>10 Guns for Field Generals -- 6 light, 4 medium</li>
</ul>
<br />
The Militia troops are not mobile -- they are also of "poor" morale and only usable to defend their own city. <span style="color: #999999;"><i>(I will have four such units that could be used for either side so that is why a maximum of four per city.)</i></span><br />
<br />
Indeed, if it was not already obvious, the above numbers are suitable for the troops I have available . . . basically three times my ten units of foot and two times my ten units of mounted.<br />
<br />
I still have some painting to do <span style="color: #999999;"><i>(three of the Milita units)</i></span> and my rules to polish before I can contemplate running this . . . and, of course, the recruiting of my opposing Ruler/Generals.<br />
<br />

They are mostly RSMs -- 8 light guns (3#ers), 8 medium guns (6#ers) and a pair of heavy guns (12#ers -- note that I've already got 4 of these painted up).<br />
<br />
Half will be given blue carriages and half red. They will serve for my Stagonian Wars forces as well as for other periods (with different artillerymen, of course).<br />
<br />
Of course this means that besides painting the guns, I will have to paint up a bunch of oxen and horses as well . . . and, of course, artillerymen for a variety of periods.<br />
<br />
<i>"<b>Why am I doing so many?</b>"</i>. . . well, because I had them I suppose . . . and having them, I might as well paint them, right?<br />
<br />
